In 1989, the leaders of countries belonging to the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, a code of human rights for children under the age of eighteen. It is a legally binding international agreement setting out the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of every child, regardless of their race, religion, or abilities. To date, 196 countries are parties to the treaty. This includes every member of the U.N. except the United States, the Cook Islands, Niue, the State of Palestine, and the Holy See. I began The Rights of the Child Project in March 2022, at the outbreak of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to focus on the plight of Ukrainian children as they fled their homes. Children continue to be threatened by war, poverty, disease, drought, and discriminated against because of their gender identity, race, religion, and culture. As adults it is our privilege to ensure the rights of all children so that our society may evolve into a world better than we were born into. War is not conducive to the health and well-being of children and as a storyteller and visual artist my hope is to highlight the inalienable rights of children across the world.
